I was awarded a fellowship grant to explore the relationship of the body to space through the dance program at RCR Arquitectes’ Landscape and Architecture Workshop . During the workshop, we were invited to use all of our senses in the act of space-making and challenge our reliance on vision alone. We discussed the power of perception and vantage points and to see dance as it relates to an architectural practice.
Mal Pelo, a Spanish dance company, led the workshop to experiment with the mechanisms of action and what they trigger. They invited us to take a look at movement and writing of the body in action. Accuracy, duration, commitment, intensities, silence, absences, presences, punctuation, habitability, capitulation, phrasing, linearity, temporality, musicality, rhythm, and writing are some of the concepts that we explored.
“The stage space is exciting because of its capacity for transformation. Discovering whether or not there is a feedback process between space and body, and how it is produced, is perhaps one of the most exciting challenges that writing on stage offers. Space is rhythm, light is rhythm. Building and rebuilding has awakened a constant curiosity similar to the one that awakens the movement.” - Mal Pelo
